100,000 and counting...

New numbers reported by CNN state that 100,000 have been killed in Burma. The aid situation is not looking good either. Both the government of Burma and the U.S. government are not making it any easier.

The government of Myanmar does not want to let outsiders from the west into their country and Bush says that he wants to send in U.S. Navy ships. Maybe we should delver our food supplies to Thailand and let the Burma government pick them up there.

With 1 million people homeless and the country's rice crop wiped out, leading to critical food shortages, this is no time to further the Bush Doctrine.

22,500-40,000 and counting...

The New York Times has updated its numbers on the Burma disaster. At the present time 22,500 are reported dead with another 40,000 still missing. It is hard to imagine the magnitude of this situation. Apparently the majority of the deaths have come from a 12 foot storm surge.

12 feet... That is how much the sea level will rise when the greenland ice sheet melts.

Warmer seas lead to stronger hurricanes and cyclones.

How many people will have to die before we see that the way we are living is killing us?

100,000...

500,000...

1,000,000...

1,000,000,000...

We will either be the greatest generation or the worst...

Up to 10,000 dead...

The New York Times is reporting that anywhere from 4,000 to 10,000 people have been killed in the wake of the catastrophic cyclone that swept Burma over the weekend. I guess not even Rambo can save us from the global climate crisis.

"Live for nothing, die for something" What?

Rambo has gone to a few hot spots over the years, Veitnam, Afganastain, Oregon? but now he is having an effect on an ongoing crisis, the 60 year long civil war in Burma.

According to an ABC News Report, “In Rangoon, the banned Rambo film has become one of the most sought-after DVDs, creating underground buzz among movie fans.”

In a country where hollywood films are ripped before they even come out in theaters, anyone caught with a copy of Rambo is rounded up and sent "away".

And the controlling government has reason for concern.

Another report says,"a paraphrased line from the movie, 'Live for nothing, die for something,' has become a rallying cry within the country and has buoyed the resolve of opponents of the military regime."

Rambo II & III were banned in Vietnam but the new Rambo opened in Hanoi on Friday, could a fictional action hero make a difference?

If not Rambo then who?

After God: The Future of Religion

I feel like I have been lost in the backwoods for the first 25 years of my life and this book has introduced me into the current conversation about God today.

Don Cupitt talks about the current state of religion in our postmodern, global, late-capitalism, multicultural society. He speaks of the 1950’s as the last time of a mono-cultural religion when, “Many people then kept in daily touch with God and the motion of God’s Spirit, rather as one now keeps in touch with the Zeitgeist through the media.”

The media is now where our society gets its identity.

When I went to Brazil in the summer of 2006 all the young people there wanted to talk about was what happened to Marissa at the end of season three of The O.C. That was the one thing we all had in common. It’s crazy but so true.

If I went there today everyone would be saying, " OMFG, Gossip Girl is back, Did you see what S. told B. at the party last night?" That is the world we live in. It is total media saturation. All I want to do is watch The O.C. on my iPhone.

And that is what’s left after God (If you wanted to know).

God is Identity.
Identity is our cultural mythology.
Global mythology is brought to us by the media.

Media is the new God.

“Welcome to the O.C. bitch.”

Saving the world... Or losing it all...

We now stand at a pivotal moment in human history.

Never before has anyone been where we now stand.

On the one hand we now have the ability to feed, clothe and shelter every person alive on the planet, to provide everyone with a primary education and basic health care, and to completely restructure our global economy to provide the world with clean renewable energy. Doing these things will restore our environment, provide jobs to the unemployed and create a safer world.

On the other hand, if we continue down the path we are now traveling, we face the prospect of our entire civilization collapsing due to global climate change, increased world hunger, falling water tables, and the end of cheap energy.

We are now faced with the greatest challenge ever to confront the human race.

If we succeed we can save the planet, if we can't we will face extinction.

We can either choose to save the whole world, or to lose it all.

The only question is what will we do?
